Within reach of Washington via a connector trail called the Custis Trail, the 45-mile W&OD Trail passes through the Virginia suburbs into the state’s horse country, with numerous stops along the way for refreshments and diversions. This trail is paved its entire length with a parallel soft trail farther west to accommodate horses. Fun stops along the way for meals include the Vienna Inn (www.viennainn.com) in Vienna, a dive that serves delicious chili dogs and cold beer, and the upscale Magnolia’s (www.magnoliasmill.com) in Purcellville at the trailhead for a celebratory end-of-the-ride glass of wine (provided you aren’t biking all the way back to Washington that day). The trail meanders through backyards, forgotten railroad towns, and remote depots—truly a national treasure.
